Founded in 1982 by the Lady Bird Johnson and Helen Hays, The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center of The University of Texas at Austin displays 650 species of native Texas plants on 12 acres of cultivated meadows and gardens. The Center's 279 acres also include nature trails, an observation tower and picnic areas.  Visitors can enjoy a full-service café, a Visitors Gallery and a store that features art, apparel and books. Rotating exhibits of sculpture and art are displayed in the gardens and the McDermott Learning Center. Staff and volunteers maintain the gardens, conduct educational workshops, lead tours and provide curriculum guidance, restore the ecological health of landscapes, participate in plant conservation projects, and conduct research visible along the center's trails into ways to manage Texas grasslands and to use native plants for their environmental benefits.
