Charlotte, is the largest city in North Carolina, is the county seat of Mecklenburg County. Charlotte was named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, King George III's wife. During the American Revolution, British General Cornwallis and his troops occupied Charlotte, but the fierce local opponents of British rule drove them out, inspiring Cornwallis to write that Charlotte was "a hornet's nest of rebellion."
