Came within 2 hours of my calling. Technician knew exactly what he was doing. He was cheerful and explained thoroughly.

A torsion spring broke and the garage door was too heavy to lift so our cars were trapped. I contacted Precision Saturday night by chat on their website and they gave me an appointment for Sunday morning.

I have replaced garage door springs myself in the past, so I know what is involved. James from Precision called me and said he could come earlier, and he arrived quickly. I watched everything he did the entire time, and it was obvious he knew what he was dooing. First he removed the old springs, the drums, cables and bearing plates. The drums looked good. The cables were very worn and had some kinks. The bearing plates, which have ball bearings for the torsion bar, were worn out. Both springs needed to be replaced, because if one breaks, you can expect the other to break soon. These torsion springs last for about 10,000 openings than they break. It is surprising they lasted close to 20 years. He also found that one of the hinges was broken, and some of the bolts needed tightening. . He installed the new springs, bearing plates, cables, and replaced the broken hinge. He tested the door, and it was well balanced and now easy to open by hand. Whiles testing he also found that one of the metal strips that cover the hinges was loose and bent, and fixed it at no charge.

Then he hooked the door up to the opener. I told him the opener was not working correctly, and would not stay in the down portion. I told him I had already ordered a new one elsewhere which was a Chamberlain like this one. He said that was good because it would fit the hanger for the existing opener and save a lot of work. He proceeded to take the cover off the opener and found that the limit parts were not lined up correctly. He took them apart and adjusted them, then tested the opener and it worked perfectly. He did not charge for fixing the opener.

When he checked the opener he also found that the garage door was traveling too far and bumping in to the bolts by the motor, and he fixed that. He also adjusted the chain. He noticed that the motor shaft and sprocket that drives the chain was tilted at an angle and had little steel shavings under it. This meant that the bushing on the motor shaft was was was wearing out, and before very long the sprocket for the chain would break, and the chain would could fall down on the cars.We agreed it was a good idea to replace the opener now before it broke down again. He said we could probably use the opener for some time before it failed. The current opener is only 1/3 horsepower, and I asked him if a 1/2 or 3/4 horsepower motor would be advisable, and he agreed, as this is a heavy wooden door.

He completely fixed the door and the the opener in less than two hours. I thought he did a very good job. The total bill was reasonable for this work. They gave a 10% senior discount and charged only for the spring repair and nothing for the opener.
I would recommend this company. And James should get a raise.

I had seen TV commercials for Precision and decided to give them a try. I was looking to have my garage door and motor given a preventative maintenance check before winter arrived.
